Spanish Civil War

During 1936 the most devastating war affected the Spanish people; the Spanish Civil War1. After the duration of the 3 years, up to a million people lost their lives. This political war was meant to get rid of the republicans out of government leadership and put the nationalists into power. Francisco Franco was the nationalist leader at the time in the Canary Islands and wanted more land2. When the pro catholic3 republicans put up a good fight to Francisco Franco, they gave up what they had because Francisco Franco was to strong; he later won and ruled Spain till his death in 1975. It was a capture for capture kind of war. The nationalists first got Morocco, and then the republicans took over the capital of Spain, Madrid. When the nationalists gained control the republicans called out for peace but Francisco Franco refused4. This war was a shot for shot, till 1939 when the Civil War was over, a few months later World War ll started, making this the most devastating time. At the time Spain was known as lushes and well off country is now known to be in debt to their eyes and quite poor people5.

During the Spanish Civil War the Sagrada Familia was broken into, a number of documents, plans, and scale models were destroyed. The biggest devastation to the cathedral was finding out that Gaudi`s, also known and recognized as ‘Gods Architect’6, workshop has been destroyed. Unlike many other cathedrals, the Sagrada Familia was the only church to survive the Civil war. Gaudi`s other 6 buildings he had were also untouched, unlike many other architectural jobs7.
